Septic systems in urban America are for the most part a thing of the past. For older homes and rural America septic systems are commonplace.
A septic system is a way to dispose of the sewer from your home safely when there is not an available municipalor private disposal system available. In the most basic terms a septic system uses bacteria to break down the waste that comes out of your home and convert it into environmentally friendly components. These bacteria can sometimes be fickle and septic systems in general have some precautions that must be taken in addition to those that must be observed with a city sewer hook-up.
Each septic system is designed to process a certain amount of sewage. If you have a under sized septic system you will quickly fill up and overwhelm the septic system, which will in turn cause you to have sewage that will not drain from your tubs/toilets. Even with properly sized systems it is still possible to overuse or misuse your septic system. I leaky toilet or faucet can easily fill and overflow a septic system. It is important to keep a close eye on your fixtures and keep them in top operating form or risk overflowing your septic tank.
Some chemicals can and will kill the bacteria in your septic system. If you kill the bacteria in your septic system, then the system will fill with waste and will need to be pumped out. This scenario will destroy the entire system in the long run.
We recommend the use of bio-clean to augment the bacteria naturally produced by you septic system.
A septic system should be pumped periodically to ensure proper operation. In a properly working septic system this should be done every 3-5 years depending on size and use.
